It’s Only Because of Violence!

flagship-know-before-you-goWhat are your thoughts on movies ratings? Do you even look at them? Now if you have read the “Why Progressive Listening” part of this blog, you know how I feel about finding truth. I believe all truth is God’s truth and sometimes that can be found in the darkest of places. See, I love film, I love a good story, and I love trying to find truth in everything. In a weird way I see God in many of the movies I see, no matter what the rating.

Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see what others thoughts were on the lines that they draw when it comes to movies. I remember hearing all the time, “well its R but its only for violence,” as if that wouldn’t affect someone at all. I remember the first rated R movie I saw with my parents permission, Saving Private Ryan. Now I wasn’t 17, but for some reason that didn’t matter for this film. Of coarse I had seen other rated R movies before, my parents didn’t know about it though! But I know people who are way over 17 and refuse to watch a movie if it is rated R, usually a Christian, unless it was The Passion. Watching Jesus being brutally murdered was ok, because it was Jesus.

Personally, I tend to not pay too much attention to the ratings of movies. I am not saying that if you do you are close minded or anything, I just like good movies. Mind you, I have seen some movies that I wish I never had, but I feel that is a risk I am willing to take.

I recently was asked to attend a screening of a major motion picture that is coming out this summer that wasn’t rated yet. After the film I had to fill out a 2 page questionnaire, pertaining to the material of movie. I believe they were trying to get a PG-13 and wanted to see if it was possible based on our opinions. I would tell you the name of the movie, but I would probably go to jail! Its was great though!!

Random Fact: There wasn’t a PG-13 rating until after the reaction by parents from seeing Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and the movie Gremlins!

But I want to hear your thoughts. Where do you draw the line? What is your reasoning? Do you think the rated system is skewed? Should Christians watch rated R movies?

Off The Shelf: The Book of Eli

It has come to my attention that I have seen more movies than most. In conversations with people I will usually talk about, quote, or reference a movie only to hear that the person has never seen it before. Because of this, I decided that from time to time I will take one of my many movies “off the shelf” and give a brief synopsis/review of it and talk about the truth I find in it. For this first entry I have chosen the 2010 release titled The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis.

This movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where Eli (Denzel) is on a journey west and he has the last physical copy of the Bible. Carnegie (Oldman) is the man who runs the town that Eli travels through, and is on a hell bent mission to find a special book (The Bible) so he can use it to become a leader with dictator tendencies. Solara (Kunis) is the daughter of a woman who Carnegie holds captive, and quickly gets caught up in the battle for this great book. This movie is rated R for brutal violence and language.

Christopher Nolan Rises!

I have been a huge Batman fan my entire life and spent the last two years counting down the days until July 20 2012. If you have been living under a rock the past two years that date was the release of The Dark Knight Rises. After seeing TDKR a total of three times now, I feel that I can write a post that I have wanted to write for a while now. Don’t panic if you are reading this before you have seen the movie because there will be no spoilers in this post. I simply wanted to write on how I think that Christopher Nolan’s adaptations to Batman on film are the best of them all. Continue reading

The Amazing Spiderman (the return of progressive listening)

As I have been counting down the days until the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, I have been keeping myself busy with other movies. This past weekend I saw The Amazing Spider-man, and I thought I would share with you my thoughts on this film without giving too much away.

Upon the announcement of this movie there was instant speculation. People thought that there was no need for a reboot being that Spider-man 3 was released only 5 years ago and had a good fan-base, but lets be honest Spider-man 3 sucked! I was in full support of this reboot and checked on its status constantly while it was in production.

In Time

So this past week I saw the movie In Time starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. Here is a brief  description of the movie:

This movie takes place in the future where humans are genetically altered to not age past 25 and that time is money. Everyone has a countdown on their arm of how much time they have left until they die. It’s a world where the rich can live forever and the poor will die young. When Will Salis (Timberlake), a poor man who lives life by the minutes, is given over a 100 years of life and accused of a murder he is forced live life on the run. He takes an heiress Sylvia Weis (Seyfried) hostage and together they set out to take down the system. Continue reading
